God forbid you’re at an outdoor festival and need to run distances of 1,000 feet or more. Anyone who has ever been on a gig where you’re sequestered behind some drape in the back of a ballroom knows the hassle of getting signal to go the distance. The product line also includes a sync generator, a 1-by-8 SDI distro, a broadcast converter, and the one I think has the most potential - the Optical Fiber to SDI converter. Since I work in a venue that has fixed cable paths (not to mention fixed budgets), I can use the SDI-to-HDMI converter to send high resolution signal from control booth to stage using existing coaxial cable and utilize HD monitors on the other end. It’s sister, the SDI-to-Analog converter, does the exact opposite. This is great if you are using higher-end capture equipment with legacy analog equipment. It’s able to take Y/B-Y/R-Y, composite, or S video in and spit out a clean, pristine SDI signal along with analog (or AES) audio. The Analog-to-SDI converter has proven invaluable for my work. The “Heavy Duty” units have all of these features, but are machined from a solid block of aircraft aluminum that can literally survive being run over by a broadcast truck. No menus to navigate, no questions to Google. But they have the connection diagrams and dip-switch settings clearly printed on the outside of the unit. My favorite thing about this entire line of converters is the lack of a need for a manual. Should the primary connection fail, the Mini Converter switches instantly to the secondary connection - a big bonus for the rental/staging crowd. Mini Converters also detect the video input and automatically switch between formats, with redundant SDI inputs that are perfect for mission-critical live events, because you can run redundant cables for critical video paths. Relevant models also use ¼-inch audio jacks and support embedded SDI and HDMI audio. 3Gb/s SDI is also fully compatible with all SD-SDI and HD-SDI equipment, so you can connect to your existing equipment. Mini Converters feature the latest 3Gb/s SDI technology that operates at twice the data rate of normal HD-SDI. All can be configured either by the external dip switches or via USB. Legacy devices need to interface with the latest/greatest. Rack space is at a premium in the studio and even more so on the road. They’re small, they’re rugged, and they solve problems. A lot of rental houses are including them with camera/switching packages, thus extending the life of gear that’s already paid for, as well as providing an upsell in quality for their customers. There’s a few reasons mini-converters are in just about every rental inventory in the country. I’ve recently had the pleasure of using a few of these from Blackmagic Design. What do you do when you can’t afford such a device, or - more to the point - don’t need to do all it can do? You turn to the growing variety of purpose-built, specific-action mini-converters. It comes with a list price at $11,200 (okay, maybe a bit less than your standard Ferrari). ( See “Road Test,” PLSN, May 2012, page 46). Last month, I had a look at the Ferrari of signal conversion, the Barco ImagePRO-II. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to explain the radical differences in the price-to-quality ratio to a client who simply wants to see a decent result. That last part is the dirty word of video: budget. Because of the plethora of video signals that have developed in the last few years, techs, roadies and designers are having to come up with creative ways to get signal from point A to point B - on time and under budget. HD to SDI, SD to SDI, VGA, YUV, RGB, HDMI, 3G - I find myself converting a lot these days. I wouldn’t advise creating satanic rituals, or messages, with this functionality. When played in reverse the recording has the spoken words “Here’s to my sweet Satan”. Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” is famously known for backmasking, despite the bands insistence of it being unintentional. It is reminiscent of backmasking, a technique that presents an audible message when the music is played backwards. If you want to change the pitch and speed or apply some audio filters, that functionality is also available.Ī reverse effect is also present and will change the direction of playback and editing. Normalizing and amplification can be done via this area, as can inserting areas of silence. The effects, whilst not as extensive as some other audio editing apps, are useful and offer enough flexibility for most users. Everything from effects, to playback and recording, to cut, copy, and paste, or fading in and out can be done from this area. It is well laid out, but people with larger hands may feel it is restrictive especially on the iPhone sized screen. The tool bar at the bottom of the display is where all your main functionality resides. As you would expect, the audio before and after will split perfectly allowing the content to be added in-line without altering or overwriting the existing audio elements. The following building design solutions were ana-lyzed and compared through 3D computer modeling, energy simulation, and finite element structural analysis: above-ground building (I), partially underground building (II), and partially underground building with sun-shading elements (III). The following design variables were considered: plan and eleva-tion composition, sun-shading surfaces, and construction technology. This study assesses the effects of various building design solutions on the energy performances of farm wineries and estimates relevant differences in construction costs. In this context, small to medium wine-growing and producing farms call for a specific approach to building design, since criteria available for industrial wineries are not suited to this production sector. This study represents the first contribution within a research project aimed at defining design criteria for en-ergy efficiency in food processing farm buildings. © 2012 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. The results of this study could be used in the design of new wineries. Moreover, we have demonstrated that the temperature and relative humidity stratification varied depending on the time of year, which has a direct impact on the handling of the wine and the number of casks levels used by winemakers. The high temperature and low relative humidity could lead to rapid aging of the wine, reducing the quality and increasing wine losses. Results showed that the hygrothermal conditions in the cask facilities can go well beyond acceptable limits, especially during the summer months. A simulation analysis to evaluate the thermal behavior in different wine-producing areas of the world was also performed. For this purpose, a study based on data obtained from a winery over several years was conducted. This article studied how aboveground constructions without air condition systems respond to changes in the ambient conditions, analyzing the resulting indoor conditions. To carry out the aging and conservation of wine, aboveground facilities are the most common solutions. In the high-quality wine production process, the temperature and relative humidity in the winery during the aging process have a decisive impact on the wine's final quality and on wine loss due to evaporation. If however we are shooting a portrait and are trying to achieve a shallow depth of field, then the full frame camera with the 50mm lens will be the better tool for the job.Īnother major influence is in the magnification factor. If shooting a landscape where maximum depth of field is required, this is clearly a benefit for a crop sensor using the shorter focal length lens. So by using a 35mm lens on a crop sensor, we achieve the same field of view as we do with a 50mm lens on a full frame camera, but due to the shorter focal length, the depth of field will be greater for any given aperture. The shorter the focal length of a lens, the greater the depth of field it produces. This has an influence on the depth of field in the image, which can either be seen as an advantage or disadvantage, depending on what you are looking for. How does this translate in the real world? If we use a 50mm lens on a full-frame camera then to get the same angle of view on an APS-C sensor, we would need to use a 35mm lens. The majority of APS-C sensors have a crop factor of ~1.6x, whereas 4/3rd cameras have a crop factor of around 2x. This effect is known as the crop factor and is measured as a degree of magnification. For this reason, crop sensor cameras appear to magnify the image compared to shots taken at the same focal length on a full frame cameras. When we view our images (either on the camera’s screen or on a computer), those taken on a crop sensor need to be magnified to a greater degree in order to fill the screen. See the image above for an illustration of this. The remaining peripheral areas are never captured by the smaller sensor. Think of using a crop sensor as taking a photo on a full frame camera but only being able to see the central 50-80% of the image. For example, using a 50mm focal length lens on both a full frame and micro 4/3rd sensor will allow the former to capture around double the angle of view as the smaller sensor. For any given focal length, a smaller sensor will capture a smaller area of the scene. The first and most obvious effect of is how much of a scene they are able to capture (field of view). Having defined what the difference is physically between different sensor sizes, how does this actually affect our photography, and the images we take? This gives them an aspect ratio of 4:3 which is obviously squarer than 3:2. Micro 4/3rd sensors, which are found in a lot of mirrorless cameras, have a physical sensor size of around 18mm x 13.5mm. APS-C sensors are around 22.5mm x 15mm in size, so still retain the same aspect ratio of 3:2. The most common of these are APS-C and micro four thirds. This gives the aspect ratio of 3:2 (three units wide compared to two units tall), which is the ratio most DSLR cameras shoot in.īy definition, a crop sensor is anything smaller than these measurements. What do they actually mean though, and how will they impact on our photography and on what we decide to buy?Ī full frame digital sensor refers to to the negative size of a 35mm film camera. #FULL FRAME SENSOR PROFESSIONAL#You’ve probably heard professional photographers raving about how good full-frame is compared to a crop sensor camera, and for anyone in the market to buy a DSLR, or indeed mirrorless camera you’ve probably come across these terms. |
